Restrain of older pigs (+10 kg)
Not many tools are required to restrain a pig, however if to be used, all required equipment for task should be ready and immediately available to you in the handling area.
To restrain a pig:
1. Calmly move the pigs by allowing it to walk to its destination at its own pace.
2. Encourage the pigs to move forward, this can be done by using the pig handling boards. Do not kick the pigs or use s ticks/prods to directly hit the pigs
3. Ensure the area is large enough to work in, but also small enough the restrict movement of the pig.
4. Ensure that it cannot move forward.
5. Apply gentle pressure with the pig board/your leg to the hind-quarters and flank of the pig to keep them still
When using snares:
1. The size of the loop should be appropriate to the size of the pig being restraint
2. Place the snare loop in the mouth and over the top jaw and snout of the pig
3. Move the loop as far back in the mouth as possible before tightening it
4. Hold the snare securely.
5. A second person can then perform the required task.
6. Release the pig by gently loosening and releasing the snare.
